Curriculum

Curriculum

Alexandra Park Junior School provides an ambitious, high quality and well-planned broad and balanced curriculum which inspires, challenges and safeguards all our children.  It has been designed to meet the individual needs of our children with a focus on purpose and enrichment promoting a lifelong love of learning.  Due to the difficult circumstances this year, the curriculum has been carefully planned and sequenced progressively to ensure every child is able to catch up on lost learning and to gain the sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and future employment.  See individual subject progression overviews for detailed plans for this catch up.  We have also carefully prepared for any child who may have to access remote learning so that no child is left behind.’

Knowledge Organisers

  • For students to succeed in a particular area, they must have a foundation of factual knowledge, understand those facts in the context of a conceptual framework and organise knowledge in order to facilitate retrieval and application (Bransford et al., 2000). We can see knowledge organisers as a way to enable this, in a much more systematic way than traditional revision guides and textbooks.

How we use them in the classroom

  • Give the knowledge organiser to the children before the start of a topic to encourage discussion and prior research. These are also sent home.
  • Talk through the knowledge organiser at the beginning of the topic, asking the children what information has sparked their interest, and if they have any questions.
  • Use the knowledge organiser as a regular retrieval tool. Mix up practice using short, low stakes quizzes, games, partner discussion, and so on, rather than constant formal testing. Do the children know more than is included on the knowledge organiser? Ask higher-level ‘why’ questions to stretch the children’s understanding and add detail.
  • Use the knowledge organiser to identify knowledge gaps throughout the topic.
  • Display an enlarged copy of the knowledge organiser on a working wall, encouraging children to add information around it during the topic.
  • Glue the knowledge organisers into the children’s topic books for regular reference or cut up the sections to focus the children and deepen their knowledge in a particular area.
  • Make links between knowledge organisers to help children understand how their learning connects. For example, remind the children of a previous year’s knowledge organiser and discuss how their new knowledge links and builds upon it.
  • Use the knowledge organiser as a handy spelling and vocabulary reminder. Keep it visible at all times and expect the children to use the proper vocabulary correctly.

How to use them at home

  • Quiz your child regular on the Sticky Knowledge.
  • Complete the Kahoot quizzes suggested using the knowledge mat to help.
  • Encourage them to practice their handwriting using the key words.
  • Test their spelling of the Keywords.
  • Ask them to research further the topic they are learning using the mat as a starting point.
  • Help them to create a quiz for their classmates with questions based on their mat.
  • Read together the suggested books that link to their topic (you may find them online)
  • Talk with you child about what they have learned before that links to their new topic.
